Why Do We Hold Onto Clothes?

We all have different reasons for holding onto items we no longer wear:

Guilt: "I spent money on this!" or "It was a gift!"

Nostalgia: Sentimental items from special moments or loved ones.

Scarcity mindset: "What if I need it later?"

Overwhelm: "Where do I even start?"—decluttering can feel like an enormous task.

Parental influence: Growing up with values of not wasting, it feels wrong to throw anything away.

Lack of time: With busy lives, decluttering isn’t a top priority.

Out of sight, out of mind: If it’s stuffed in the back of a drawer, it’s easier to ignore.

The Guilt Factor

Many of us experience guilt when decluttering. Whether it’s due to the money spent or the sentimental attachment, holding onto items we don’t need has hidden costs. Clutter blocks positive energy and prevents us from welcoming new opportunities. Feng shui suggests that clearing space can allow abundance to flow into our lives.

Additionally, science shows that clutter impacts mental health, contributing to feelings of stress, guilt, and anxiety. So, it’s not just about cleaning up—it’s about creating a healthier, more joyful environment.

The Importance of Detoxing Your Wardrobe

Saves Time: On average, we spend 18 minutes a day deciding what to wear. A clutter-free wardrobe helps streamline this process, reducing stress in the morning.

Saves Money: When you can see what you own, you’re less likely to buy duplicates or unnecessary items.

Cleanses Your Past: A wardrobe detox helps you let go of clothes that no longer suit your current lifestyle, body shape, or personal style. Holding onto old trends or ill-fitting clothes keeps you stuck in the past instead of focusing on the future.

Boosts Confidence: A well-curated wardrobe filled with items you love allows you to feel confident and comfortable. You shouldn’t have to sift through clothes that no longer make you feel good.

The 20/80 Rule

Did you know that we only wear 20% of our wardrobe 80% of the time? That means most of what we own just takes up space. Decluttering allows you to focus on the 20% you actually wear and love, creating a more functional, stylish, and organized closet.

How to Detox Your Wardrobe

To successfully declutter, follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Sort Your Clothes - Get boxes or bags for different categories:

Trash: Items that are too worn, stained, or damaged.

Donate: Clothes that are in good condition but no longer serve you.

Resell: High-quality items or designer pieces.

Gift: Items that may be better suited for a friend or family member.

Tailor: Clothes that need altering to fit properly.

Step 2: The 10-Item Test- Take 10 items at a time and ask yourself:

- Is it my colour?

- Do I wear it and love it?

- Does it fit today?

If it’s a "yes" to all, keep it. If it’s a maybe due to needing tailoring, don’t put it back in your wardrobe until it’s fixed. For sentimental items, allow yourself to keep only two and consider turning them into something new or displaying them proudly.

Step 3: Organize

When packing items back into your closet, colour code them. This makes it easier to find what you’re looking for and helps you visually maintain the organization.

Hanger Trick

To further streamline your wardrobe, try the hanger trick. After decluttering, turn all your hangers one way. When you wear an item, turn the hanger the opposite direction. Over time, this will show you which clothes you’re still not wearing, making future detoxes even easier.

Key to Success: Let Go Quickly

One of the biggest pitfalls of decluttering is not removing the unwanted items fast enough. Once you’ve sorted through everything, get those bags out of your home within 24 hours to prevent second-guessing.

Decluttering Brings Clarity and Confidence

A clutter-free wardrobe simplifies your life, giving you the confidence to dress effortlessly. By letting go of the old, you make space for the new—a better version of yourself. Remember, no one ever regrets decluttering!

As Marie Kondo famously said, “Thank it and let it go.” You’ll not only feel lighter but also be empowered to embrace a wardrobe that reflects who you truly are today.
